An Open Letter to Kate Spade

Dear Kate,

I feel like we were at a good place – an excellent place even – but today, you let me down.

Let me take you back to the beginning. We were introduced around 4 years ago by our mutual friend, Milly, and ever since that first meeting, I have loved you, been loyal to you and spent way too much money on you. I love you and everything you stand for; your clothes, your shoes, your wallets, your phone cases, the charities you support and your handbags, oh, your handbags. What I loved most about you, though, was your personality. The idioms, quotes, detail and character you put into everything you made.

Do you want to know the moment I truly fell in love with you? My mum and I were shopping in your Caesars Palace, Las Vegas store, when I saw her. She was magic. Love at first sight, you could say. Your trench coat, lined with French words and phrases, had me sold. The girls in the store were the friendliest shop assistants I had come across and it was at that moment, that I knew a love affair had begun.

Since then, my loyalty has been unquestionable. I only use your iPhone cases (even though they cost me an arm and a leg through the Australian supplier), I #travelcolorfully, taking your handbags and clutches with me everywhere I go as well as using your Fathom City Guides to plan my overseas holidays. Not only was my 21st birthday cake dedicated to you, but I #livecolorfully everyday by using hashtags in open letters (seriously, who does that?). I wear your jewellery, your shoes and read your books. Do you understand the trust, faith and hope I had in you?

So why am I so upset, you’re probably wondering?

Well, today, you announced a Surprise Sale, which is another reason I love you, as you give customers an opportunity to purchase things they’ve been lusting over for months (who, me?) for half the price. As soon as I heard, I jumped on the website and started bookmarking my favourites in order to buy them. Because I am extremely organised and like to research everything I do (which I’m sure you can appreciate), I thought I would double check your shipping policy. There it was, a sentence that I will never forget, outlining that you do not ship internationally for surprise sales. I presume you can understand my confusion, as you normally ship to Australia, albeit for $35. I will now pose a question to you. Why? Why do you not ship internationally for surprise sales?

Just in case you were wondering, the below items are what I would have purchased if you shipped to Australia. A loss, worth $513, to you:

Call To Action Terry $99

Tequila bag

Mikas Pond Stacy ‘Zinnia Pink’ $49

Mika Wallet

Gumdrop Studs ‘Clear’ $19

I hope we can work together to repair our relationship after today’s disagreement but hope you can understand why I am so upset. I’ll be visiting Honolulu in four weeks, and would love to see you. According to Google Maps, my hotel isn’t too far away from you (only a 3 minute walk), so let’s meet up for a drink (probably not tequila – it’s not my friend)!

Until then,

Yours faithfully,

Olivia x

  1. Oh Olivia I feel your pain! I love Kate Spade but sometimes feel like I can justify the price – however sale prices are a different story. I really wish they had a store in Aus. And I would have totally bought that handbag as well – tequila is not my friend – so true!

    1. It’s so annoying Krystyna but apparently a KS store is opening soon in Melbourne! Can’t wait. Then, it will be trying to get to Melbourne from rural NSW! x
